Newton Battles in Tight Match with Robinson

The Newton Eagles girls’ tennis team came up just short in a hard-fought match against Robinson on Friday, falling 5-4 in a contest that came down to the final doubles courts.

Newton held their own in singles play, with standout performances across the lineup. At the top spot, Jailyn Hall earned a gritty 10-8 victory over Avery Crocker, while Olivia Sornberger dominated at No. 2 with a 10-1 win against Kate Rosborough. Lauren Gier also picked up a strong 10-4 win at No. 4 singles.

Despite the Eagles’ momentum, Robinson managed to even the match by securing key wins at No. 3, 5, and 6 singles. The most dramatic battle came at the No. 5 position, where Newton’s Beth Brocious pushed Alex Leek to the limit before falling in a nail-biting 11-10 decision.

In doubles, Newton’s top team of Hall and Sornberger delivered again, claiming a 10-5 win at No. 1. But Robinson answered back, taking both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to seal the overall victory.

Though the final score favored Robinson, Newton showed resilience and depth throughout the lineup, with several matches decided by just a handful of points. The Eagles will look to build on their strong play as the season continues.
