Newton Volleyball Falls to Fairfield in Hard-Fought Matches
Newton, IL — September 9, 2025 — The Newton Community High School volleyball teams battled hard on Tuesday night against a strong Fairfield squad, but all three squads came up short in their matchups.
The freshman team opened the evening, falling 18-25, 15-25. The junior varsity followed with a close contest, losing 23-25, 22-25. The varsity squad also fought valiantly but could not overcome Fairfield, dropping two sets 22-25 and 18-25, bringing Newton’s overall record to 6-6 on the season.
Varsity seniors Hydi Bierman and Morgan Schafer each contributed an ace, with Claire Probst adding one of her own. On the offensive side, Bierman led with six kills, followed by Allie Hermann’s five, and Isabel Meinhart contributed three. Other scoring came from Probst, Joslynn Pitcher, Meinhart, and Amy Shull.
The team’s setters distributed the ball effectively throughout the match. Shull tallied seven assists, Meinhart three, and Bierman and Hermann two each, while Schafer and Pitcher added one apiece. Defensive efforts were highlighted by Hermann’s 11 digs, Bierman and Schafer with six each, Meinhart with four, Probst with three, and Shull with one.
Head Coach Jill Kistner praised her team’s effort, noting that while the scoreboard didn’t go Newton’s way, the Eagles showed determination and teamwork. “We fought every point and learned a lot tonight,” Kistner said.
Newton’s volleyball teams return to action on Thursday, September 11, hosting Edwards County. The freshman squad will start at 5 p.m., followed by JV at 6 p.m., and varsity at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Eagles as they look to bounce back.
