Newton Soccer Splits Play, Extends Streak Before Falling to Effingham

The Newton Eagles boys’ soccer team saw both ends of competition last week, extending their winning streak to seven matches with a decisive shutout at Robinson before falling in a high-scoring home contest against Effingham.

On Thursday, September 11, Newton traveled to Robinson and came away with a dominant 3-0 victory to remain unbeaten in conference play at 2-0-0. The win improved the Eagles to 9-1-0 overall.
Lance Volk, Henry Will, and Evan Holder each found the back of the net, while Will and Holder also tallied assists. Newton’s defense was equally sharp, with Wade Ochs, Brady Bergbower, Cylas Dickerson, and Brett Bower locking down the back line. Keeper Curtis Will earned his fifth clean sheet of the season, anchoring a unit that has been a steady strength for the Eagles.

The Eagles returned home on Tuesday, September 16, to face a strong Effingham side but couldn’t keep the momentum rolling, dropping a 6-2 decision. Despite the loss, Newton showed flashes of its attacking depth. Brock Anderson scored one goal and assisted on another, while Evan Holder continued his strong week with a goal of his own.

With the split, Newton sits at 9-2-0 overall. The Eagles remain in a strong position early in conference play as they prepare for the next stretch of the season.
