The Newton Eagles struggled to keep pace Friday night as visiting Mt. Carmel leaned on its powerful ground game to earn a 32-7 win.
Mt. Carmel opened the night with a 12-play, 77-yard drive capped by a 12-yard touchdown run from Elliott Acree. Quarterback River Deisher later connected with Owen Blake for an 18-yard score to extend the Golden Aces’ first-half lead to 13-0.
Newton had opportunities before halftime, including a drive inside the red zone, but came up empty after an interception at the goal line.
The Eagles found momentum early in the third quarter when quarterback Hayden Mulvey hit Dexter Fulton on a 39-yard catch-and-run touchdown. Henry Will added the extra point to trim the deficit to 13-7.
But the Aces responded with three straight touchdowns—highlighted by Deisher’s 28-yard run and a 26-yard scoring burst by Sitaleki Militoni—to put the game out of reach.
Newton’s offense found most of its success through the air, with Mulvey passing for 142 yards. Fulton led the receiving corps with 109 yards and a touchdown on seven catches. Defensively, Dominic Baltzell had a first-quarter interception return of 21 yards, and Ian Kessler and Caleb Flasch each added fumble recoveries to give Newton three takeaways on the night.
Despite the loss, the Eagles showed resilience, forcing turnovers and creating scoring chances. They’ll look to regroup heading into next week’s matchup.
