Newton Battles, But Falls to Richland County in High-Scoring Clash

The Newton Eagles put up an explosive offensive effort on Friday night but were unable to slow down the Richland County Tigers, falling 57-34 at Chivesek Field. Both teams combined for more than 950 yards of offense in a game that featured quick strikes, long runs, and highlight-reel plays from start to finish.

First Half Shootout

Newton wasted no time getting on the board. Quarterback Hayden Mulvey connected with Dexter Fulton for a 9-yard touchdown on the opening drive, and after Richland County responded, Mulvey struck again—this time finding Quincy Fulton for a dazzling 77-yard catch-and-run score.

But the Tigers’ dual-threat quarterback Gavyn Cothern answered every time, ripping off long touchdown runs and hitting Reed Klingler on an 82-yard strike. At halftime, Richland County held a slim 21-20 lead after Newton’s Quincy Fulton punched in a 3-yard run just before the break.

Tigers Pull Away

The third quarter turned into a shootout within a shootout. Mulvey threw three more touchdown passes—two to Dexter Fulton and one to Eli Wolf—keeping Newton within striking distance. But Richland County’s rushing attack proved too much.

Cothern and running back Xavier Owusu Gyan combined for over 340 rushing yards, with Gyan breaking free for touchdown runs of 86 and 55 yards. A late punt return score by the Tigers put the game out of reach as Newton’s offense finally stalled in the fourth quarter.

Offensive Highlights

Despite the loss, Newton’s offense showed balance and explosiveness. Mulvey finished with 264 passing yards and four touchdowns, spreading the ball to multiple receivers. Quincy Fulton led the ground game with 93 rushing yards and a touchdown, while also adding 94 yards receiving.

Dexter Fulton was a go-to target, hauling in eight catches for 59 yards and two touchdowns, plus a two-point conversion. Wolf and Maddox Horner also contributed big plays in the passing attack.

Looking Ahead

Newton (now 1-4) on the season) showed its offensive firepower but will look to clean up mistakes and tighten up on defense as conference play continues. The Eagles return to action next week in another key matchup.
