Eagles Pick Up Key Win After Tough Stretch
After a challenging week on the pitch, the Newton Eagles soccer team bounced back strong with a 3-0 shutout victory over Mt. Carmel, improving their record to 14-4-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
The Eagles’ scoring attack was led by Henry Will, Holden Barthelemy, and Evan Holder, each finding the back of the net. Will and Barthelemy also recorded assists as Newton controlled possession for most of the match.
Defensively, Newton continued its impressive form, securing its 10th shutout of the season. Keeper Curtis Weber made two key saves, while the defensive line — Wade Ochs, Brady Bergbower, Lance Volk, and Brett Bower — anchored a dominant backfield effort that limited Mt. Carmel’s chances.
Earlier in the week, the Eagles faced setbacks, falling to Mattoon and Lincoln before battling to a draw with Olney. The lone goal against Mattoon came from Brock Anderson, assisted by Lance Volk.
Newton looks to keep its momentum going as the regular season winds down. The Eagles will celebrate their seniors tonight after they face Salem at 4:30 pm.
