
Newton Takes Down Olney in Three-Set Battle
OLNEY – The Newton Eagles varsity volleyball team earned a hard-fought road victory over Olney on October 16, winning in three sets: 24-26, 25-18, 25-11. The win improves Newton’s record to 16-12 on the season.
The Eagles showed resilience after dropping a tight first set, storming back with dominant play at the net and strong defense in the final two sets.
Leading the way offensively was Claire Probst with 7 kills, followed by Hydi Bierman and Emma Brooks with 6 apiece. Stella Schackmann and Isabel Meinhart each added 4 kills, while Joslynn Pitcher chipped in 2 and Paige Wagner contributed 1.
Setting up the offense were Wagner with 13 assists and Amy Shull with 12. Maleah Miller and Morgan Schafer each tallied assists as well.
On defense, Schafer anchored the back row with 14 digs, while Bierman added 13 and Grace Schumacher 8. Probst and Kenzie Holder also made key defensive contributions.
At the net, Meinhart led the blocking effort with 4, followed by Pitcher with 2 and Bierman and Probst each adding 1.
From the service line, the Eagles were sharp, totaling 9 aces—Schafer led with 4, while Schackmann, Bierman, Miller, Meinhart, and Probst each added one.
The JV and Freshman squads also brought home victories, with the JV winning 25-15, 25-15, and the Freshman team taking their match 26-24, 25-17, giving Newton a clean sweep over Olney across all levels.
