Hall and Sornberger Compete at IHSA State Tennis Tournament
Newton High School’s talented tennis duo, Jailyn Hall and Olivia Sornberger, represented the Lady Eagles at the IHSA State Tennis Tournament this past weekend. Both athletes earned their place at state following strong performances at sectionals in Effingham.
In the opening round, Hall faced off against Kruthi Ramanath of Urbana (University), falling 6-0, 6-0 to the eventual top performer. She continued to battle in the backdraw but was defeated by Evelyn Johnson of Crystal Lake (Central), 6-0, 6-0.
Sornberger opened with a competitive match against Abigail Harms of Bethalto (Civic Memorial), dropping a close first set before ultimately falling 7-5, 6-0. In consolation play, she split sets with Shreya Patel of Morris, winning the first 6-3 before Patel rallied to take the match 3-6, 6-0, (10-1) in the tiebreaker.
Though the results didn’t go their way, both Hall and Sornberger showed great determination and poise on the state stage, capping off an impressive season for the Newton Eagles tennis program.
