Newton Lady Eagles Fall to Mt. Carmel

The Newton Lady Eagles hosted the Mt. Carmel Lady Aces in non-conference girls basketball action, but Mt. Carmel’s strong offensive showing proved too much as the Lady Aces earned a 73–55 victory.

Mt. Carmel jumped out quickly, scoring 23 points in the opening quarter and maintaining control throughout the night. The Lady Aces led 44–26 at halftime and continued to apply pressure on both ends of the floor.

Mt. Carmel was led by M. Randall, who poured in 25 points, while Hersey added 19. Peach chipped in 13 points and Dunlap finished with 11, as Mt. Carmel connected on 28 two-point field goals and went 10-for-14 from the free-throw line.

Newton was paced by Izzy Meinhart, who knocked down six three-pointers on her way to a team-high 20 points. Alani Bergbower and Allie Hermann each added 14 points, with Hermann also converting all six of her free-throw attempts. Claire Probst contributed across the stat sheet with seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Despite being outscored in the first three quarters, the Lady Eagles showed fight in the fourth, outscoring Mt. Carmel 20–14 to close the game.

With the loss, Newton falls to 12–7 overall and 2–2 in conference play. The Lady Eagles will look to bounce back when they host Shelbyville on Thursday night.
