Newton opened tournament play with a tight contest against Robinson, falling by three points in a defensive battle that went down to the final minutes.
Robinson held a narrow 24–18 halftime advantage before Newton surged in the third quarter, outscoring Robinson 15–8 to briefly take control. However, Robinson responded late to edge out the win.
