Each Monday between now and the opening of Sister Act! we will highlight one of the seniors who will be taking the stage on March 26th through the 29th (7pm, 7pm, 7pm, and 2pm). This week we will be highlighting Karly Deckard, the daughter of Adam and Robin Deckard who will be portraying Sister Mary Martin of Tours.
What musicals have you been in at NCHS and what characters/roles did you play?
I have participate in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, White Christmas, Beauty and the Beast, Mamma Mia, Oklahoma, Six as Anna of Cleves, Newsies as Bunsen, and now playing Sister Mary Martin of Tours in Sister Act.
What was your favorite musical and why?
My favorite musical was Newsies because I enjoyed the dancing and songs. I also enjoyed the group of people from the musical.
What scene in Sister Act is your favorite and why? (This does not have to be a scene you are in)
My favorite is the groups scenes with the nuns because I enjoy singing and dancing with them on stage.
What are three things being in the musical have taught you? and how have you learned these?
Musical as taught me how to expand my comfort zone because of learning how to put myself out there and be confident while doing it.
Musical has also taught me to keep going and never give up. While learning lines and choreography take time, pushing to the end can give such a great result and musical is a great example of that.
Another thing musical has taught me is to live in each moment. I have learned that focusing on the present can take you much farther and live fully.
What are two pieces of advice you would give young people who want to start performing in musicals at NCHS?
Two pieces of advice I would give is to have fun and keep a positive work ethic. Musical is such an enjoyable experience but a strong work ethic and the determination to learn play a big part in musicals.
What qualities do you see exemplified in the adults who help put on this show that you will take with you as you leave NCHS and how do they demonstrate these qualities?
Some qualities I see is the hard work the adults who run our show put towards us. They give up so much of their time to make our musicals happen. They always are there to help make us better and bring out our full potential.
What about Sister Act is different from other musicals you have been in?
Sister Act is different because now I am a senior in the big shoes who have the younger kids look up to us. I try to set the best example for them so they can do the same when they are in my shoes.
What will you miss the most once the final curtain closes on your NCHS musical career?
I will miss being able to sing and dance with the same group of people I have my entire high school career. I’m also going to miss all of the support I receive and the bonds created from it.
