NEWTON — The Newton Lady Eagles battled throughout Friday’s home contest but ultimately fell to the Cumberland Lady Pirates 7–4 on March 13 at NCHS.
Cumberland finished with 10 hits while Newton collected seven, but a few defensive miscues and timely Pirate hitting proved to be the difference.
After a scoreless first inning, Cumberland broke through with a run in the second inning to take a 1–0 lead. Newton answered in the bottom half of the inning when Jorjia Reich (#5) delivered an RBI hit to tie the game at 1–1.
The Lady Pirates added two runs in the third inning to regain the lead at 3–1. Newton responded in the fourth inning with two runs of their own to tie the contest at 3–3, highlighted by aggressive baserunning and timely hitting.
Cumberland regained the advantage in the fifth inning and extended the lead with two runs in the sixth. The Pirates added an insurance run in the seventh inning to secure the 7–4 victory.
Newton had several strong performances at the plate. Claire Probst (#15) finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk, while Jorjia Reich (#5) went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. Allie Hermann (#14) added a hit and an RBI while reaching base three times with two walks. Emma Brooks (#10) and Izzy Meinhart (#4) also recorded hits for the Lady Eagles.
On the mound, Newton used three pitchers in the game. Karly Deckard (#30) started and allowed one run over two innings. Emma Inyart (#6) worked three innings in relief, and Lexie Ghast (#24) closed the game with two innings of work.
Despite the loss, Newton showed strong offensive pressure with seven hits and several stolen bases but stranded 10 runners on base.
The Lady Eagles will look to bounce back in their next game as they continue the early part of the 2026 season.
