
The Newton Eagles boys tennis team split a pair of recent matches, falling 9-0 to Flora before bouncing back with a 6-3 win over Mt. Carmel.
Against Flora, Newton was swept in singles and doubles play. Oliver Ochs had one of Newton’s closest singles efforts at No. 5, battling Gabriel Calheiros in a 7-5 opening set before Calheiros took the match 7-5, 6-0. In doubles, Kahlin Michl and Ryan Spiker pushed Flora’s Dulaney Bullard and Carson Hackney in the first set at No. 2 doubles before falling 7-5, 6-0. Oliver Ochs and Tyler Spiker also forced a second-set tiebreak at No. 3 doubles before falling 6-1, 7-6.
Newton responded with a strong 6-3 victory over Mt. Carmel. The Eagles won four singles matches and two doubles matches to secure the team win.
Michael Shamhart earned a 10-8 win over Rhett Andrews at No. 2 singles, while Noah Goad edged Will Hudson 11-10 (5) in a tight No. 3 match. Ochs added a 10-5 win at No. 5 singles, and Tyler Spiker picked up a 10-8 win at No. 6.
In doubles, Michl and Ryan Spiker defeated Andrews and Ty Hipsher 10-8 at No. 2 doubles. Ochs and Tyler Spiker closed out Newton’s scoring with a 10-3 win over Grant Lane and Ronnie Berberich at No. 3 doubles.
