
The Newton Eagles turned in a strong sectional performance, earning multiple state-qualifying marks and several top finishes across the track and field events.
Matthew Haskett led the way in the 400 meters, winning the sectional title with a time of 51.12 seconds to qualify for state. Henry Will followed close behind in second place at 51.97, also earning a qualifying spot.
Hayden Borgic added another sectional championship for Newton in the 800 meters, finishing first in 2:00.10 to punch his ticket to state. Tanner Whitaker placed fifth in the same race with a personal-best time of 2:05.08.
Newton’s 4×400 relay team of Henry Will, Matthew Haskett, Tanner Whitaker and Hayden Borgic also claimed first place, finishing in 3:29.72 to qualify for state. The 4×100 relay team of Eli Wolf, Brock Anderson, Quincy Fulton and Dexter Fulton placed second in 44.32 seconds, also earning a state berth.
Brock Anderson had a solid day individually, placing fourth in the 100 meters in 11.63 and sixth in the 200 meters in 24.03. Quincy Fulton finished seventh in the 200 in 24.26 after a false start in the 100.
In the hurdles, Marko Myburgh placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 18.67. Owen Schackmann finished fifth in the 300 hurdles with a season-best 43.64, while Borgic was sixth in 43.75.
Newton also saw strong efforts in the field events. Eli Wolf placed third in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 6.03 meters. Evan Holder took fourth in pole vault at 3.40 meters, Harrison Kinkade placed fifth in triple jump at 11.31 meters, and Caleb Flasch finished seventh in discus with a personal-best throw of 41.61 meters.
