
The Newton Lady Eagles battled until the final inning Wednesday but came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Teutopolis.
Newton actually outhit the Wooden Shoes 4-3 in the contest, with senior Izzy Meinhart leading the way offensively with two hits.
The Lady Eagles struck first in the top of the third inning when Allie Hermann blasted a solo home run to left field to give Newton a 1-0 advantage. Hermann finished with one hit, one RBI, and one run scored.
Teutopolis answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring twice to take a 2-1 lead. The Wooden Shoes added another run in the sixth inning that proved to be the difference.
Newton made things interesting in the seventh inning, plating another run before Teutopolis closed the door to secure the one-run victory. Paige Wagner drove in a run for the Lady Eagles and also drew two walks. Claire Probst added a hit and scored a run for Newton.
Lexie Ghast turned in a strong performance in the circle despite the tough-luck loss. The Newton pitcher allowed just three hits and no earned runs over six innings while striking out two.
Newton showed patience at the plate throughout the game, drawing five walks, but Teutopolis pitcher Alyssa Tipton recorded nine strikeouts to help the Wooden Shoes hold on.
