Eagles 4×400 Relay Earns State Medal at IHSA Class 1A Finals

The Newton Eagles brought home a state medal Saturday at the IHSA Class 1A Boys Track and Field State Finals in Charleston, highlighted by a ninth-place finish in the 4×400-meter relay.

The relay team of Matthew Haskett, Parker Harris, Hayden Borgic, and Henry Will advanced to the finals after qualifying with a time of 3:28.04 in Friday’s preliminary round. In Saturday’s finals, the Eagles improved their performance, crossing the finish line in 3:26.71 to secure ninth place in the state and earn All-State recognition.

Senior Matthew Haskett competed in the 400-meter preliminaries, finishing 16th overall with a time of 52.07 seconds.

In the distance events, senior Hayden Borgic was unable to compete in the 800-meter preliminaries after qualifying for the state meet. Henry Will was also unable to run in the individual 400-meter preliminaries. Despite those setbacks, both athletes returned to help lead the Eagles’ 4×400 relay to a state medal performance.

The Eagles’ 4×100-meter relay team of Brock Anderson, Eli Wolf, Dexter Fulton, and Quincy Fulton posted a time of 44.61 seconds in the preliminaries, finishing 32nd overall.

The state medal in the 4×400 relay capped another successful season for Newton’s boys track program and provided a memorable finish on the biggest stage in Illinois high school track and field.
