Newton Volleyball Opens Season 8-0 After Sweeping Altamont and Defeating Salem

The Newton Eagles continued their outstanding start to the 2026 volleyball season, winning their first eight varsity matches after victories over Altamont and Salem this week.

Newton entered Tuesday’s match at Altamont with a 5-0 record and came away with a convincing 25-10, 25-21 varsity sweep. The Eagles followed that performance Thursday at Salem, battling through three sets for a 25-13, 22-25, 25-16 victory.

The two wins moved Newton’s varsity record to 8-0.

Strong Week for the Eagles

Against Altamont, Stella Schackmann led Newton with nine kills and four blocks. Claire Probst added five kills, while Jossie Stanley, Allie Hermann and Layla Thomann each had three kills. Grace Schumacher added one.

Stanley recorded 14 assists to lead the offense, while Hermann, Paige Wagner and Schumacher each contributed two assists and Maleah Miller had one.

Probst recorded Newton’s lone ace. Defensively, Thomann led with six digs, followed by Hermann with five and Schumacher with four.

Newton’s blocking was led by Schackmann with four, while Hermann, Probst and Schumacher each added one.

The Eagles then faced a tougher test Thursday at Salem but responded with another strong performance.

Schackmann again led the attack with 10 kills, while Hermann and Thomann each recorded eight. Probst added five kills, Stanley had three, and Schumacher and Emma Brooks each had one.

Stanley took control of the offense with an impressive 27 assists, with Hermann adding four and Schackmann and Schumacher each contributing one.

Probst was especially effective serving against Salem, recording six aces. Hermann and Thomann each added one.

Hermann anchored the defense with 18 digs, while Stanley had 12. Thomann and Schumacher each recorded eight digs, Probst had six, Schackmann and Miller each had three, and Brooks added one.

Schackmann, Stanley and Schumacher each recorded two blocks.

The freshman/sophomore team also split its two-set match at Salem after sweeping Altamont. Newton’s JV squad went 2-0 for the week, defeating Altamont 25-10, 25-7 and Salem 25-20, 25-20.

Newton will return to action Tuesday, September 8, against Fairfield. Freshman action begins at 5 p.m., JV at 6 p.m., and varsity at 7 p.m.
