CHARLESTON — The Newton Community High School girls cross country team turned in a solid performance Saturday at the Little Trojan and “Big” Trojan XC Invitational, placing fifth as a team with 182 points.
Newton was led by Heather Bergbower, who finished 14th overall in 21:18.47, averaging a 7:06-per-mile pace.
Avery Geier followed with a 21st-place finish in 22:03.38 (7:21 pace), while Chloe Holsapple crossed the line in 32nd place at 23:11.20 (7:44).
Rounding out Newton’s scoring five were Kimberly Bierman, who placed 60th in 25:09.58 (8:23), and Kate Bierman, who finished 100th in 27:53.56 (9:18).
Newton’s five runners combined for 182 points, good for fifth place behind Shelbyville (29), Mahomet-Seymour (40), Mt. Zion (157) and Champaign Centennial (175).

On the boys side, Newton had three runners recorded in the results. Levi Salyers led the Eagles with a 107th-place finish in 20:39.82, averaging 6:53 per mile.
Kendall Probst finished 147th in 22:00.24 (7:20), followed by Jeremiah Hills in 152nd at 22:20.31 (7:27).
With only three Newton boys listed in the results, the Eagles were recorded as incomplete in the team standings and did not receive a team score.
