The Newton American Legion Post 20 is preparing for its annual Veterans Day program, continuing a long-standing Newton tradition of gathering the community to honor those who have served our country.
The traditional Veterans Day program has normally been held on the Jasper County Courthouse lawn. However, with the courthouse now being demolished, this year’s ceremony will have a new location.
The 2026 Veterans Day program will be held Wednesday, November 11, at the Newton Community High School practice field (football field). The Newton American Legion is partnering with Newton Community High School to provide a new setting for the community’s annual tribute.
While the location is changing, the purpose remains the same: to honor and remember our veterans.
A Growing Field of Honor
As part of this year’s observance, the Legion is working to create an expanded Field of Honor, featuring flags representing local veterans—both living and deceased.
More than 500 flags were displayed last year, creating a striking tribute throughout the community. Organizers hope to build on that display in 2026 and are encouraging families to submit flags honoring their veterans.
Veterans’ flags are being accepted from September 1 through November 2.
Flags must be 5 feet by 9½ feet and stenciled. The identification is important to ensure that each flag can be properly returned to its owner or family following the event.
If a flag is not stenciled, the American Legion will stencil it free of charge.
The Legion can also assist families who need to purchase a new flag. High-quality flags are available for $65, and the Legion can order additional flags if they are not currently in stock.
Volunteers Needed
Creating the Field of Honor requires a tremendous amount of work, and the Legion is asking the community for volunteers.
Help is needed with:
- Putting flags on poles
- Staking the field
- Putting flags up and taking them down
- Folding flags
- Contacting families for flag pickup
- Helping with the Ham & Bean Dinner
- Serving, drinks and cleanup
Organizers stress that even 15 or 30 minutes of someone’s time can make a difference.
The change in location provides an opportunity to make this year’s Veterans Day observance something special while continuing a tradition that has been part of the Newton community for years.
The Newton American Legion extends its appreciation to Newton Community High School for partnering in the event and providing the use of its practice field.
