The Newton Eagles came up just short Friday night, falling to Olney 30-25 on September 18.
Newton trailed 6-0 after the opening quarter and 20-0 at halftime before mounting a second-half comeback. The Eagles erupted for 18 points in the third quarter and added seven more in the fourth, but Olney answered with 10 fourth-quarter points to preserve the five-point victory.
Newton finished with 366 total yards, including 235 rushing yards and 131 passing yards. The Eagles ran the ball 23 times and averaged 10.2 yards per carry.
Maddox Horner led the Newton ground attack with 167 rushing yards on 11 carries, an impressive 15.2 yards per carry, while scoring two rushing touchdowns. He also contributed two receptions for 10 yards.
Quincy Fulton added 52 rushing yards on nine attempts, while Hayden Mulvey rushed for 16 yards on three carries.
Through the air, Hayden Mulvey completed 11 of 24 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Eli Wolf was Newton’s leading receiver with five catches for 64 yards, while Dylan Earnest added one reception for 22 yards and Quincy Fulton caught three passes for 35 yards.
Newton’s special teams also produced some big plays. Fulton returned one kickoff 46 yards, while Eli Wolf had two kickoff returns for 54 yards. Wolf also returned a punt six yards.
On defense, Maddox Horner recorded eight total tackles, including three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Ian Kessler finished with nine tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss, while Griffin Bierman recorded five tackles, a solo tackle for loss and an assisted tackle for loss, along with a sack.
Parker Harris and Ian Kessler each recorded an interception, according to the defensive statistics.
Newton’s Henry Will handled the majority of the punting duties, averaging 28.7 yards on three punts, including a long of 37 yards. He also converted one of two extra-point attempts.
Olney was led offensively by quarterback Owen Cycholl, who completed 13 of 22 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns while adding 61 rushing yards. Xavier Owusu-Gyan rushed for 125 yards, while Olney finished with 413 total yards.
Newton’s 25 points came after the Eagles battled back from the 20-point halftime deficit, but Olney’s fourth-quarter response was enough to keep the Eagles from completing the comeback.
