Eagles Volleyball Improves to 20-2 With Wins Over Vandalia and Robinson

The Newton Community High School volleyball team picked up two more wins this week, defeating Vandalia on Sept. 29 before sweeping Robinson on Oct. 1 to improve to 20-2 on the season and 3-0 in Little Illini Conference play.

Newton opened the week against Vandalia, earning a 25-17, 25-12 varsity victory.

The Eagles were led offensively by Probst with seven kills, followed by Hermann with five. Schackmann and Schumacher each added three kills, while Stanley and Thomann recorded one apiece. Stanley finished with nine assists, while Wagner added five.

Schumacher led Newton with seven digs, followed by Miller with five and Hermann and Probst with four each. Earnest recorded three digs, while Wagner had two, with Thomann, Stanley and Brooks each contributing one.

Thomann led the Eagles with three aces, followed by Miller and Schumacher with two each and Probst with one. At the net, Schackmann recorded three blocks, Probst had two, and Hermann and Thomann each added one.

Newton also came away with a freshman/sophomore win over Vandalia, 25-11, 25-21, while the junior varsity swept the Vandalia JV, 25-21, 25-17.

The Eagles returned to action Oct. 1 against Robinson and again posted victories at the freshman/sophomore and varsity levels. The freshman/sophomore team won 25-12, 26-14, while the varsity squad swept Robinson 25-12, 25-15.

In the varsity match, Thomann paced the Eagles with seven kills. Schackmann added five, Probst four, and Schumacher and Hermann three apiece. Stanley recorded one kill.

Stanley directed the Newton offense with 20 assists, while Thomann added one assist.

Schumacher served up six aces, followed by Miller with three, Stanley with two and Probst with one.

Hermann led the Eagles defensively with four digs. Schackmann, Miller, Thomann, Probst and Schumacher each recorded two digs, while Stanley added one. Stanley also recorded two blocks.

The Newton JV fell to Robinson in a three-set match, 22-25, 25-10, 14-16.

With the two varsity victories, Newton improved its overall record to 20-2 and remained unbeaten in Little Illini Conference play at 3-0.

The Eagles’ freshman/sophomore squad will return to action Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Teutopolis Freshman/Sophomore Tournament. Newton is scheduled to face Effingham at 8:30 a.m. and WSS at 9:30 a.m.
