
The Newton Community High School volleyball team continued its strong season with consecutive varsity victories over Grayville and Mt. Carmel, improving to 22-2 overall and 4-0 in Little Illini Conference play.
Newton opened the two-match stretch Oct. 5 with a dominant performance against Grayville, winning 25-14 and 25-8.
Allie Hermann led the Eagles with seven kills, followed by Stella Schackmann with five. Layla Thomann and Grace Schumacher added three kills apiece, while Claire Probst recorded two. Jossie Stanley and Tessa Jones each contributed one kill.
Stanley directed the offense with 16 assists. Emma Brooks added three assists, while Thomann and Probst recorded one apiece.
Thomann led Newton’s serving effort with three aces. Probst and Brooks each recorded two, while Maleah Miller and Schumacher added one apiece.
At the net, Probst led the Eagles with three blocks. Stanley and Schackmann each contributed one. Stanley, Thomann and Brooks recorded three digs apiece, while Hermann, Probst and Ava Earnest each finished with two.
Newton followed the Grayville victory with another straight-set win Oct. 6, defeating Mt. Carmel 25-16 and 25-18 to extend its winning run.
Thomann led the Eagles’ attack with 10 kills. Schackmann and Hermann added six kills each, while Probst and Schumacher contributed four apiece. Stanley finished with two kills.
Stanley again led Newton’s offense, distributing 28 assists. Miller and Thomann each added one assist.
Schackmann dominated at the net with five blocks. Probst added two, while Hermann, Thomann and Schumacher each recorded one.
Thomann led the defensive effort with five digs. Stanley, Probst and Schumacher each recorded four, while Miller and Hermann finished with two apiece. Probst served two aces, and Miller added one.
Newton’s junior varsity team also defeated Grayville on Oct. 5, winning 25-14 and 25-8. The JV Eagles fell to Mt. Carmel on Oct. 6, dropping matches by scores of 16-25 and 22-25.
The freshman-sophomore team defeated Mt. Carmel 25-8 and 25-23.
With the two varsity victories, Newton improved its overall record to 22-2 and its Little Illini Conference mark to 4-0.
