Sydney Zumbahlen Receives Jasper County Retired Teachers Association Scholarship

Sydney Zumbahlen has been awarded the 2020 Jasper County Retired Teachers Association scholarship of $1,500. A 2018 Newton Community High School graduate, she is now a student at Eastern Illinois University majoring in Music Education.

After all applications were evaluated. Sydney was chosen to receive the scholarship based on her well-written personal statement, her attaining a 4.0 GPA, her proving her work ethic by having a summer job as well as working during the school year, and by her thoughts about the importance of music education. Her feeling is that music education is not only a necessary part of education as a whole, but also is extremely essential as it allows students to express themselves in creative ways and to be comforted by music. In her words, “Music is a gift, a passion, an escape, and an important part of humanity, and I am extremely excited to get to share that with future generations.”

Sydney is the daughter of Phil and Judy Zumbahlen of rural Newton. The Jasper County Retired Teachers Association wishes her well in her continuing endeavor.
