Lesley Woods of rural Newton has been awarded the 2019 Jasper County Retired Teachers scholarship of $1,500. Although she graduated from Newton Community High School in 2018, Lesley is enrolled at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville as a junior for the fall of 2019 due to her numerous dual credit classes and a very successful freshman year at SIUE.
The daughter of Vance and Mary Woods, Lesley is majoring in secondary education with a concentration in mathematics. She carries a 4.0 GPA while working her two part time jobs.
The Scholarship Committee thanks all applicants for the 2019 scholarship. All applications were read, studied, and evaluated with one candidate finally receiving the unanimous approval of all those involved. Scholarships are awarded yearly to one graduate of NCHS who is a college junior or senior education major. Applicants may reapply yearly.
