Newton
Carol Stella Miller age 78, of Newton passed away Thursday, August 12, 2021, at HSHS St.
Anthony Memorial Hospital, Effingham, Illinois.
Funeral services celebrating Carol’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 14, 2021 at
the Crain Funeral Home, Newton with Pastor Earl Brown officiating. Visitation will be held
from 1:00 p.m. until time of service Saturday, August 14 th in the funeral home. Burial will be in
the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Newton. Memorial gifts honoring Carol may be made
to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Carol was born on April 24, 1943 in Newton, Illinois the daughter of George “Babe” and Lucille
(Phillips) Colwell, Jr. On January 31, 1960, Carol married Darold D. Miller in Newton, Illinois.
For eighteen years, Carol was a cook at Newton Central Grade School. She later worked for
Crossroads Printing until her retirement. Carol was a member of Good Shepard Lutheran
Church in Newton.
Carol loved being a mother and adoring grandmother to her grandchildren. Following the
grandchildren’s activities and spending time with family brought Carol great joy. She was the
Colwell family organizer. Everyone knew Aunt Carol would have the plan. Carol and Darold
spent a portion of the year as Winter Texans. Either in Texas or at home, Darold and Carol
enjoyed square dancing. The couple spent time taking lessons and traveling to the dances. In
her free time, Carol loved to knit, crochet, and sew. During her winters in Texas, Carol met with
others ladies to knit and crochet hats, mittens and shawls for various charities.
Carol will be loved and remembered by her husband of sixty-one years Darold Miller of Newton;
children Angela (Keith) Mellendorf of Jewett, Barbara (Marty) Keller of Newton and David
Miller of Charleston; grandchildren Kimberly (Tim) Courson, Andrew (Danielle) Mellendorf,
Emily (Tim) McGinnis, Sabrina (A.J.) Roley and Nicholas Keller; great-grandchildren Piper
McGinnis, Tripp McGinnis, Elijah Mellendorf, Adalida Mellendorf, Evelyn Mellendorf, Kaden
Roley and baby girl Emma Jade Roley due to arrive in December; sisters Katherine Clark of
Farmersburg, IN, Shirley Alexander of Kansas City, MO and sister-in-law Julia Colwell of
Newton.
Her parents and siblings Donald Colwell, Rhoda Schwartz, Roy Colwell and Morris Colwell
preceded her in death.
