Beau Slankard, son of Sherry and Brad Slankard, will portray Sky in the NCHS Musical production of Mamma Mia on March 30 through April 2.
What musicals have you been in at NCHS and what characters/roles did you play?
The first musical I was in was Thoroughly Modern Millie where I was casted as one of Muzzy’s boys. The year after I was in Cinderella in the ensemble. The next two years were Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as one of Joseph’s brothers. After that was White Christmas I was one of the soldiers. In the same year was Beauty and the Beast where I played Monsieur D’arque. This year is Mamma Mia where I am playing as Sky.
What was your favorite musical and why?
My favorite musical is between Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Mamma Mia because in Joseph I liked the cast the most but in Mamma Mia is the best part I’ve got.
What scene in Mamma Mia is your favorite and why? (This does not have to be a scene you are in)
My favorite scene is Lay all Your Love because that is the biggest scene I have in this musical.
What are three things being in the musical has taught you? and how have you learned these?
I learned patience because I may not enjoy being in it all the time but I am able to push through it and continue to keep going. I also learned perseverance because although it’s not fun all the time I am able to push through. I learned anger management because there are plenty of times musical has made me plenty angry even when I want to say something I don’t.
What are two pieces of advice you would give young people who want to start performing in musicals at NCHS?
Remember going into it is a lot of hard work.
What qualities do you see exemplified in the adults who help put on this show that you will take with you as you leave NCHS and how do they demonstrate these qualities?
Perseverance is important because although you may want to stop you can’t. I also learned to be calm during stressful situations when being on stage for a long time. It gets very stressful which they taught me to not me so stressed out.
What will you miss the most once the final curtain closes on your NCHS musical career?
After the musical, I will miss my friends.
