Melanie Dion, daughter of Tim and Lori Dion, will portray Tanya in the NCHS Musical production of Mamma Mia on March 30 through April 2. Tickets for the musical are now on sale in the NCHS office.
What musicals have you been in at NCHS and what characters/roles did you play?
Throughout my musical career, I participated in Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat playing Judah’s Wife, Beauty, and the Beast as a villager, Mary Poppins as a child extra, and Mamma Mia playing Tanya.
What was your favorite musical and why?
My favorite musical is Mamma Mia! I love the music, the scene, and the amazing cast. I have really enjoyed stepping into a larger role this year and it has been fun trying something new!
What scene in Mamma Mia is your favorite and why? (This does not have to be a scene you are in)
My favorite scene in Mamma Mia would have to be Chiquitita. I love just being able to have fun and sing a song that is my favorite song from the whole show.
What are three things being in the musical has taught you? and how have you learned these?
Musical has taught me to be responsible, friendship, and to have a hardworking attitude. Whether it is making sure you are on stage at right time, putting on the correct costume, or moving props you gain a lot of experience through this experience. Throughout musical, I have learned a lot about friendship and have made so many unforgettable friendships that will last a lifetime. There is a lot of hard work put into a show and putting in so much effort to put on the best show teaches you to push through and have that hardworking attitude.
What are two pieces of advice you would give young people who want to start performing in musicals at NCHS?
My first piece of advice is to try new things. Even if you are slightly considering musical I would suggest trying it because you only live once and it is so much fun to perform. My second piece of advice is to just have fun! Yes, it can be a lot of work and time spent but when you walk out on that stage to perform it is such an amazing experience and is worth all the hard work.
What qualities do you see exemplified in the adults who help put on this show that you will take with you as you leave NCHS and how do they demonstrate these qualities?
As students participating in musicals, we are surrounded by amazing adults. Our shows would not be possible without the hard work of the directors, costumers, set builders, or choreographers. Our program is truly lucky to have those hardworking people to help put on our shows. I have learned so much from all of them and I will miss seeing them next year. I want to thank all of them for giving up their time to make our shows successful and possible!
What will you miss the most once the final curtain closes on your NCHS musical career?
I will miss the cast and the relationships I have made throughout my musical career. I will also miss just being on stage. I love learning choreography and singing onstage and I will miss that after my final show.
