Following is a summary of minutes of a regular meeting of the Board of Education of Jasper County
Community Unit School District No. 1 held on Monday, October 16 th , 2023 in the office of the Board of
Education. Board members present were Mrs. Mandy Rieman, Mrs. Holly Farley, Mrs. Mandi Utley, Mr.
David Blecha, Mr. Brady Shull and Mrs. Jackie Schackmann. Board members absent were Mr. Bill
Meinhart.
All votes are considered unanimous unless otherwise noted.
Mandy Rieman called the meeting to order.
Approval to Adopt Agenda.
Mandy asked for Recognition of Guests and Public Comments. Susan Iffert Lindley presented her
concerns on school safety. Tasha Rennier presented her concerns on school and bus safety.
There was one FOIA request. Allium Data submitted a commercial FOIA Request for a copy of the last
property and casualty insurance renewal summary for all lines of insurance purchased by the school
district and a copy of the last employee benefits insurance renewal summary for health, dental and
vision plans sponsored by the school district.

Regular Minutes and Closed Session Minutes for September 25 th , 2023,
Bills and Payroll,
Presentment of monthly financial reports,
Destruction of Closed Session Recordings for March 12, May 2, June 3, and June 21, 2018,
$600 from Athletic Boosters for the Amp in the gym,
$288.20 from Athletic Boosters for Tennis Sectional T-Shirts,
$3,738 from Athletic Boosters for weight room equipment,
$125 from Barlow Lock and Security to the Newton FFA,
$6,000 from an anonymous donor ($3,000 to JCJH and $3,000 to NCHS) for a portable sink and other
equipment for chemistry, physics, biology and math education,
$1,000 from the Whitetails Unlimited to the Bass Fishing Team,
Disposition of Surplus Technology items,
Under the Superintendent’s Report, Mr. Sornberger presented a PowerPoint presentation as Mrs.
Jessica Guzman, Mrs. Beth Probst and Mrs. Jennifer Bales discussed the Academic Achievement 2023
Fall Benchmark Reports for Math and Reading in the Jasper County School District.
Approval of Mandi Rieman as a Delegate to Represent the Board at the Joint Annual Conference,
Approval of Real Estate Purchase Agreement for the Purchase of 907 W Washington Street, Newton,
Illinois,
Approval to seek Bids for a NCHS Greenhouse,
Approval to appoint Bill Meinhart and Brady Shull as members of the Special Board Committee for
Buildings and Grounds.
The Board entered into executive session at 7:00 p.m. for 1.5 ILCS 120/2 ( c ) ( 1, 21 ) – To Consider
Information Regarding Appointment, Employment or Dismissal of Individual Employees and minutes of
meeting lawfully closed under the open meetings act.
Approval to return to open session at 7:07 p.m.
Approval to keep closed the Closed Session Minutes from January 1 st , 2019 to June 30 th , 2019,
Approval to employ Rob Overman as a Full Time Bus Driver/Half Time School Maintenance Worker
effective immediately for the 2023-2024 School Year.
Approval to employ Bethany Orsburn as a District Paraprofessional effective immediately for the 2023-
2024 School Year.
Approval to accept the letter for a maternity leave of absence from Mary Jo Walk starting January 6 th ,
2024, then returning on April 2 nd , 2024.
Meeting adjourned at 7:26 p.m. Next regular board meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 13 th ,
2023 at 6:30 p.m. at the Board of Education Office located at 1401 Clayton Avenue.
