100 Years Ago-1899

·Rose Hill: Don’t ask when you come to town if anyone saw the candy man-that is the man who had more money than he wanted or the man who was selling cough drops.

·Wheeler: It is rumored that James Sampson went to a dance in Dieterich and has not returned at this writing. It is feared that he has eloped with some fair lady. We hear that D.P.Brim, a former resident of Wheeler, and editor of the Dieterich Gazette, is thinking of selling his paper.

·Lieut.Lyman Harris,of Co.B, got home from Cuba last week, coming in several days after most of the boys did. In regard to certain rumors that he intended to bring someone else with him,he denies the allegations and defies the alle-gators.

·Ex-Sheriff S.D. Leffler,Jerry Skelton,J.S. Hizey,esq.and others are making a drive to establish at Skeleton’s livery barn and wagon yard a regular monthly combination sale of live stock and merchandise at auction and private sale the second Saturday in each month.

75 Years Ago-1924

·Forty-two years ago,Frank L. Shup became editor of the Press, which has continued without a break ever since.

·Lis defeated the Newton second team Sunday at the Fairgrounds in a hard fought game, 8 to 3. Batteries for Lis were Dart, Scanlan, and Mitchell; and for Newton,Miller,Parr and Weber.

·The Star Theatre had two seating capacity audiences, Saturday night, a town full of people from the country motoring in to see the shows. Good roads would be an almost priceless boon to Jasper County, and Newton as the county seat and center of attraction, would share in the general advantages that would accrue to the community.

·Rose Hill: Miss Pauline Coad of Hidalgo has been the guest of her brother and sister-in-law,Mr.and Mrs. Fred Coad,Jr.,in town.

50 Years Ago-1949

·Dorris L. Chapman, a merchant, was elected president of the NCHS Board of Education Monday evening to succeed Lawrence E. Eaton, turkey farm owner living northwest of the city.

·The horse era yielded another step to the automobile period Tuesday when the famous hitching rack, which had stood for many years on south Lafayette,just south of the southwest corner of the public square,was removed.

·Charles Keys, 85, passed away May 25. Keys operated a print shop at Willow Hill for

many years and also published a newspaper, the Yale Special, for some time.

·Newton Press Mentor 5 cents a copy.

25 Years Ago-1974

·Twins,Carolyn and Marilyn Ginder have won the honors of valedictorian and salutatorian of the NCHS graduating class.

·A new basketball coach for Newton Community schools has been selected, Gerald Blaudow.

·Red & White: chicken breast-79c per lb.; garden sweet peas-4 cans for $1; 22 oz. Dove liquid dish soap-45c; family size Tide-$2.75; and a 2-lb.box of Kraft Velveetta-$1.59.

10 Years Ago-1989

·Shawn McCrillis put new shrubbery on the courthouse lawn as part of a project to rejuvenate the lawn.

·Valedictorian Tom Volk and salutatorian Lisa Speers will be honored during graduation ceremonies for the class of 1989 Thursday evening at NCHS.
