Lady Eagles Fall in Home Opener Against Effingham

The Newton Lady Eagles battled Effingham in their home opener on Thursday night. The fresh/soph team was able to defeat the Hearts with scores of 25-17, 23-25, and 15-13. The team also played well, although they narrowly lost with scores of 25-27 and 23-25. The varsity team battled until the end of the third set but unfortunately started the season with a 0-1 record ( 24-26    25-21    21-25)

The varsity category leaders included Hermann leading the team with 3 aces, followed by Mahaffey, Meinhart, and Frichtl with 1 ace each. Frichtl dominated in kills, securing 13, while Mahaffey contributed 5, and Martin added 4. Hermann, Stanley, and Meinhart also contributed with 3, 1, and 1 kills, respectively.

In assists, Mahaffey led the team with 16, while Martin had 3, and Frichtl, Schafer, Meinhart, and Hermann each had 2, 1, 1, and 1 assists.

On the defensive end, Hermann stood out with 14 digs, closely followed by Mahaffey with 12. Martin and Frichtl also contributed with 11 digs each, while Stanley had 5, Schafer had 2, and Meinhart had 1.

Finally, Meinhart led the team in blocks with 2, while Mahaffey and Frichtl each had 1 block.

The Lady Eagles will play in the Fairfield Tournament today facing Cisne, North Possey, and Christopher.
