NCHS Varsity Eagles Soar to Back-to-Back Wins Against Hutsonville and Effingham

The NCHS Varsity Eagles softball team showcased their strength and resilience this week, notching back-to-back wins against Hutsonville and Effingham.

Eagles Top Hutsonville with 6-1 Victory

On Tuesday, the Eagles defeated the Hutsonville Varsity Hut-Pal Lady Tigers 6-1, powered by a dominant pitching performance from Karly Deckard and timely offense.

NCHS got on the board early in the bottom of the first inning. Camryn Martin’s infield single helped spark the rally, with the Eagles pushing across two runs to take the lead.

The Eagles extended their lead in the fifth inning, starting with a solo home run to right field by Sally Mahaffey. Martin later grounded out, allowing another run to score, pushing the Eagles’ advantage to 5-1. They would add one more run to secure the 6-1 win.

Deckard earned the complete-game win, allowing just one hit and one run over seven innings while striking out six and walking none. Her counterpart, Hayden Monan, went the distance for Hutsonville, striking out seven and walking one, but gave up six runs on eight hits.

Martin led the Eagles with two RBIs, while Addyson O’Dell and Alisson Stanley each collected two hits. Jorjia Reich stole two of the team’s five total bases. Defensively, NCHS was flawless, committing no errors, with Stanley handling six chances in the field.

Rilyn Lawhead recorded the lone hit for Hutsonville, while Gracie Alumbaugh led the Tigers defensively with five fielding chances.

Eagles Edge Effingham in High-Scoring Thriller

On Monday, the Eagles held off a furious late rally from Effingham to secure a 10-9 win in a nail-biter. NCHS jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead early but had to dig deep to hold off the Flaming Hearts.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the first with an RBI single from Audrie Reich and a two-run double by Bailee Frichtl. They added three more in the second, highlighted by Mahaffey’s solo homer and a clutch sacrifice bunt from Stanley that plated two more.

Frichtl added to the lead with a solo home run in the third, making it 7-0. But Effingham wouldn’t go quietly, launching a barrage of home runs—six in total—to claw their way back into the game. Bria Beals, Keagyn Koenig, and Natalie Armstrong all homered, with Armstrong sending two over the fence.

Despite the power surge from Effingham, Amelia Collins stayed composed on the mound, pitching all seven innings and earning the win. She gave up eight hits and nine runs (only two earned), while striking out one and walking one.

Frichtl and O’Dell each recorded two hits for the Eagles, while Frichtl and Stanley drove in three runs apiece. NCHS also swiped four bases and turned a key double play to help preserve the win.

Effingham’s Armstrong and Sidney Donaldson each collected two hits, with Armstrong going 2-for-3 with two home runs and two RBIs.

Looking Ahead

With momentum building, the NCHS Varsity Eagles are set to face off against Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Varsity Hatchets on Thursday at home, following their road game against Edwards County Varsity Lions.
