Strong Hitting Not Enough As Eagles Falls To Altamont Indians

Despite an impressive performance at the plate, Newton Eagles Varsity 2025 couldn’t overcome a tough fourth inning as they fell 9-5 to the Altamont Varsity Indians on Monday evening. The Eagles outhit their opponent 8-3, but a seven-run surge by the Indians proved too much to overcome.

David Ferguson led the offensive effort for Newton, going 3-for-4 with a solo home run, two singles, and two RBIs. His homer to right field in the sixth was one of the game’s bright spots for the Eagles.

The game started with fireworks, as Altamont’s Keegan Schultz launched a solo homer to left field in the top of the first. Newton responded quickly in the bottom half, with Quincy Fulton blasting a two-run home run to left to give the Eagles an early 2-1 lead.

However, things unraveled in the top of the fourth when Altamont capitalized on Newton’s defensive struggles. With just two hits, the Indians put up seven runs, fueled by a three-run shot from Brayden Elam on a full count pitch. The inning flipped the game and gave Altamont a commanding 8-2 lead.

Ferguson’s home run in the sixth trimmed the deficit, and Newton added another run in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback.

Drake Wolf took the loss for Newton, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing eight runs—only one of them earned—on three hits while striking out two. On the other side, Dyson Wagner earned the win for Altamont, giving up five hits and two runs over five innings with one strikeout and five walks.

Reed Tharp also had a strong game for Newton, going 2-for-2 at the plate. The Eagles showed good discipline, drawing eight walks total, with Wolf and Dexter Fulton each earning two free passes.

For Altamont, Elam, Reardon, and Schultz each had a hit, while Schultz led the team with three walks. The Indians played a clean game defensively, committing no errors, with Elam recording a team-high four chances in the field.
