St. Anthony Tops Newton in Boys’ Tennis Match

Despite a valiant effort and a thrilling win at No. 2 singles, the Newton boys’ tennis team fell to Effingham St. Anthony on Monday, dropping the match 8-1.

The lone win for the Eagles came courtesy of Alex Bigard at the No. 2 singles position. After dropping the first set 0-6 to St. Anthony’s Joey Trupiano, Bigard rallied in impressive fashion, taking the second set 6-4 and edging out a tight 10-5 tiebreaker to earn Newton’s only point of the day.

In other singles action, Isaac Street fought hard at the top spot but fell 6-0, 6-3 to Manaye Mossman. Wesley Britton was defeated 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while Brennan Bigard pushed his opponent at No. 4 but ultimately came up short, 6-0, 6-4. Kahlin Michl and Michael Shamhart dropped their matches at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.

In doubles, the top pairing of Street and Britton nearly pulled off an upset after winning the first set 7-5, but Mossman and Karolevicz of St. Anthony came back strong to take the second set 6-3 and the match tiebreaker 10-7.

The Bigard brothers, Brennan and Alex, gave St. Anthony’s Trupiano and Hakman a fight at No. 2 doubles, especially in the second set, but fell 6-1, 7-6 (5). Meanwhile, Shamhart and Michl lost 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 3 doubles slot.
