On Thursday, April 24, students at Newton Community High School (NCHS) witnessed a powerful and emotional lesson about the real consequences of drunk and dangerous driving. The school organized a mock accident on campus, featuring a simulated crash scene complete with emergency response efforts.
Local emergency services, including police, fire, EMS, Air Evac Lifeteam, and the coroner, partnered with NCHS staff and school resource officer Adam Deckard to bring the event to life. The exercise was designed to show students the seriousness of reckless driving behaviors such as texting while driving, drinking and driving, and speeding.
The scene was staged with student actors portraying accident victims. Emergency personnel responded exactly as they would to a real accident, working to extricate victims from vehicles, providing medical care, and transporting the critically injured by air ambulance.
School officials said the goal of the event was to leave a lasting impression on students before prom and graduation season—a time when accidents involving young drivers are sadly more common.
“We hope this makes them think twice before making risky choices behind the wheel,” one organizer shared. “Seeing their classmates in this scenario, even though it’s simulated, brings home just how fast lives can change.”
The mock accident was a sobering experience for many in attendance, and school officials expressed deep gratitude to all the local first responders and the Air Evac crew for their participation and commitment to keeping the community safe.
