Newton Girls Excel in Key Events at 1A Prelims

The Newton High School girls track and field team made a powerful impression at the 1A Prelims, with standout performances in pole vault, triple jump, and the sprint relays.

Vaulting to the Top

In one of the meet’s most thrilling highlights, seniors Karasyn Martin and Camryn Martin soared to the top of the pole vault competition, both clearing 3.05 meters to advance to the finals on Saturday. Their performance solidified Newton’s reputation as a dominant force in field events.

Triple Jump Triumph

Senior Sydney Kinder delivered another clutch performance in the triple jump, leaping 10.97 meters to claim fourth place. Her strong showing not only contributed valuable team points but also underscored her versatility as a multi-event athlete.

Sprint Relays Shine

Newton’s speed was on full display in the sprint relays. The 4×100 relay team — Makayla McVicar (12), Morgan Schafer (11), Sydney Kinder (12), and Stella Schackmann (9) — finished with an impressive time of 50.84 seconds, showcasing a blend of experience and emerging talent.

The same quartet returned for the 4×200 relay, delivering one of the team’s best finishes of the day. Their time of 1:47.88 earned them a 5th-place spot, putting Newton firmly in the state finals on Saturday.

Also competing in the Thursday prelims was freshman Stella Schackmann in the 100 meters, finishing in 13.14 seconds to place 34th overall in a highly competitive field.

The 4×400 relay team — Karasyn Martin (12), Camryn Martin (12), Sydney Kinder (12), and Makayla McVicar (12) — posted a time of 4:17.95, securing 16th place.

In the 4×800 relay, Newton placed 24th with a time of 10:39.24, with split times from Layna Marshall (2:34.60), Grace Schumacher (2:31.21), Avery Geier (2:36.60), and Yurieth Zavala (2:56.81).

On Saturday, the Martin twins will start off the day at 10 am followed by Syndey Kinder in triple jump (which will take place after 1A, 2A, and 3A long jump). The 4×100 relay will take the track at 11:40 and the 4×200 will take the track at 2:25. All times are approximate.
