Board of Education Minutes for October

Following is a summary of minutes of a regular meeting of the Board of Education of Jasper County
Community Unit School District No. 1 held on Monday, October 21 st , 2024 in the office of the Board of
Education. Board members present were Mr. Brady Shull, Mr. David Blecha, Mrs. Jackie Schackmann,
Mrs. Mandy Rieman, Mrs. Holly Farley, Mr. Bill Meinhart, and Mrs. Mandi Utley.
All votes are considered unanimous unless otherwise noted.
Mandy Rieman called the meeting to order.
Approval to Adopt the Agenda.
Mandy asked for Recognition of Guests and Public Comments. There were none.
There were no FOIA Requests.
Approval of Consent Agenda as presented.
Regular Minutes and Closed Session Minutes for September 23 rd , 2024,
Bills and Payroll,
Presentment of monthly financial reports,
$250 from Cultural Homestay International,
$1,499.98 from the Embarras Tourism Council to the NCHS Chorus,
$347.94 from the NES/JCJH Band Aides for reeds and sticks,
$53.97 from the NES/JCJH Band Aides for reeds,
$2,400 from Jasper County Music Boosters for a new light board,
$2,700 from Jasper County Music Boosters for new in-ear monitors,
$1,000 from Whitetails Unlimited Inc. to the Bass Fishing Team,
$200 to the NCHS Volleyball Team from the Peoples State Bank,
$100 to the NCHS Bass Fishing Team from Dominic Rouseey,
$2,000 to the NCHS Boys Basketball Team from an anonymous donor,
$2,000 to the NCHS Girls Basketball Team from an anonymous donor,
$20 from Celeste Jackson to Mrs. Newkirk’s 3 rd grade class for classroom supplies/needs,
Grant donation to Mrs. Newkirk’s 3 rd grade class from Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation to be
used for STEAM activities in the classroom,

Report card envelopes from Dairy Queen of Newton, IL to students of NES,
Declare a broken popcorn machine from NES as surplus,
Chelsea Cox as a NCHS Girls Basketball Volunteer Coach,
Lawrence Klier as a mentor at Newton Elementary School.
Under the Superintendent’s Report, Mr. Sornberger announced the Safety City Presentation scheduled
for October 22 nd , 2024 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m at Newton Elementary School. Bikes and scooters
giveaways will be held at the event. Strategic Objective #3: The JCCU1 School District strives to provide
a positive and engaging academic atmosphere in which all students are challenged to achieve academic
growth. The board heard a report on fall benchmark testing data throughout the district. The district
continues to focus on subgroup pockets that affect desired test results on statewide assessments.
Approval of Mandy Rieman as the IASB Delegate for the Joint Annual Conference.
Approval of Title 1003A School Improvement Grant.
Approval of the Contract with Triple A Asbestos for Tile Removal at Newton Community High School.
Approval to enter executive session at 7:23 p.m. for 1.5ILCS 120/2 (c) (5) – The Purchase or lease of real
property for the use of the public body, including meetings held for the purpose of discussing whether a
particular parcel should be acquired.
Approval to return to open session at 7:34 p.m.
Approval of the resignation of Cody Beam as the NCHS Assistant Softball Coach.
Approval of the resignation of Sara Beam as the JCJH Head Softball Coach.
Approval of the resignation of Brooke Hoke as an NES Paraprofessional.
Approval of a FMLA leave of absence for Shanelle Julian, Paraprofessional, at NES.
Approval to advertise for a NCHS Assistant Softball Coach and a JCJH Head Softball Coach.
Meeting adjourned at 7:34 p.m. Next regular board meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 18 th ,
2024 at 6:30 p.m. at the Board of Education Office located at 1401 Clayton Avenue.
