The City of Newton’s Street Department will begin its annual leaf collection program on Monday, November 2, offering residents an opportunity to have fallen leaves collected along city streets throughout November and potentially into early December.
Leaf vacuuming will take place Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through the end of November. If an extended season is necessary, collection may continue into the first week of December.
Residents are asked to place leaves along the roadside of the ditch nearest the street or at the edge of the street. The city’s leaf vacuum cannot reach across the ditch, so leaves placed on the opposite side of the ditch will not be collected. Leaves must also be positioned so they do not interfere with traffic.
The collection program is for leaves only. Twigs and limbs will not be collected.
Residents who need to request leaf pickup can contact City Hall at 618-783-8451 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. After 4 p.m., residents may call the Street Department at 618-783-8511 and leave a message that includes their address and phone number.
Yard Waste Facility Open Saturdays in November
In addition to curbside leaf collection, the city’s yard waste facility will be open every Saturday in November from 8 a.m. until noon.
The facility is located at 10318 E. 1050th St. and is available exclusively to Newton residents. Commercial dumping is not permitted.
The facility accepts grass, leaves, small limbs and other yard and garden waste. Residents bringing materials in bags must empty the bags and take them home.
The facility does not accept painted wood, paper products, plastics, cardboard or root wads.
Residents are encouraged to follow the city’s guidelines when preparing leaves and yard waste for disposal to help ensure a smooth and efficient fall cleanup season.
The leaf collection schedule and yard waste facility information were announced by the City of Newton on October 20, 2026.
