Eagles Basketball Advances to Championship Game at LIC Tournament

The Newton Eagles Varsity Basketball team defeated both Mt. Carmel and Casey-Westfield to advance to the LIC Championship game where they will face the Olney Tigers at 8pm tonight in Olney.

In the Mt. Carmel game, the Eagles defeated the Aces with a final score of 57-55 in overtime. The Eagles held the lead at the end of the first 18-16, however, by half the Aces had taken the lead 36-27. In the third quarter the Eagles scored 12 to Mt. Carmel’s 6 and in the final quarter the Eagles were able to tie it by scoring 12 to the Ace’s 9. The Eagles rounded out the win with six in overtime compared to the Aces 4.

Leading the scoring for the Eagles was Caden Nichols with 24 points (5,4,2 of 2). Gus Bierman scored 9 Dylan Geir scored 8 (3, 0, 2 of 5), (3,1) Jacob Weber, and Kye Bergbower each scored seven (3,0,2 of 5) (1, 0, 5 of 6). Marc Jansen rounded out the scoring with a two-pointer.

Newton then defeated Casey with a final score of 59-52. Newton took the lead and finished out the first quarter ahead with a score of 18-9, however, by the half the score was 25-22 Casey. During the third quarter, the battle continued for the lead ending with the Eagles at 37 and the Warriors at 39. The final quarter continued the battle for the lead with the Eagles rounding out the game with 22 points in the final quarter to the Warriors 13.

Lead scorers for the game were Caden Nichols with 21 (4,3, 4 of 4) and Parker Wolf with 20 (5,1,7 of 8). Also scoring were Kye Bergbower and Dylan Gier with 6 each, Jacob Weber with 4, and Gus Bierman with 2.
