The Newton Eagles soccer team put together an impressive showing at the annual Red and Gold Tournament, closing out the week with a championship in the Silver Bracket.
Newton opened the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Altamont, improving to 2-0 on the season. Brock Anderson delivered the game’s lone goal, while the Eagles’ defense held strong to secure their second clean sheet of the year.
The Eagles then faced a tough challenge against Effingham on Thursday, falling 2-0 in a hard-fought matchup.
Newton bounced back in bracket play with two decisive wins. In Game 1, the Eagles defeated Charleston 5-1. Henry Will and Evan Holder each scored twice, while Lance Volk added a goal. Assists came from Wade Ochs, Will, Daniel Falcioni, and Oliver Ochs. The defense kept Charleston out of rhythm all match, only allowing a late penalty kick in the final minutes.
In the Silver Bracket championship game, Newton continued their strong play with a 3-1 victory over Teutopolis. Luke Farley, Henry Will, and Daniel Falcioni each scored one, with key assists again coming from Henry Will (2) and Falcioni.. The back line of Wade Ochs, Brady Bergbower, Cylas Dickerson, and Brett Bower, anchored by goalkeeper Curtis Weber, set the tone defensively to help seal the title.
With the Red and Gold Tournament behind them, the Eagles leave with momentum, a Silver Bracket championship, and plenty of confidence as the season moves forward.
