Eagles Defeat Mattoon

Newton Varsity Eagles took the lead late in the game in a 4-2 victory over Mattoon on Tuesday.  The game was tied at two with Newton Varsity Eagles batting in the top of the sixth when Isaac Flowers grounded out, scoring one run.

Mattoon opened up scoring in the first inning, when Cayden Knierim tripled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run.

Gus Bierman was credited with the victory for Newton Varsity Eagles. The lefthander went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out three and walking one.  Flowers threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.  Flowers recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Newton Varsity Eagles.

Logan MacDonald took the loss for Mattoon. The bulldog surrendered zero runs on one hit over three and two-thirds innings, striking out five.

Gage Reynolds, Flowers, Carder Reich, and Ben Meinhart each collected one hit to lead Newton Varsity Eagles.  Newton Varsity Eagles didn’t commit a single error in the field. Max Meinhart had  seven chances in the field, the most on the team.

Zach Wetzel went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Mattoon in hits.

Eagles Defeat Mt. Carmel

Newton Varsity Eagles defeated Mt. Carmel Golden Aces Varsity 2-0 on Wednesday as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Max Meinhart induced a double-play from Noah Noble to finish off the game.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Newton Varsity Eagles pitchers struck out eight, while JD Bowser sat down seven.

Newton Varsity Eagles got things moving in the first inning, when Mason Mulvey grounded out, scoring one run.

One bright spot for Mt. Carmel Golden Aces Varsity was a double by Gehrig Jones in the second inning.

Mason Schafer was the winning pitcher for Newton Varsity Eagles. The pitcher surrendered zero runs on three hits over six and a third innings, striking out eight and walking one.  Meinhart threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.  Meinhart recorded the last two outs to earn the save for Newton Varsity Eagles.

Bowser took the loss for Mt. Carmel Golden Aces Varsity. The righty lasted six innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out seven and walking zero.

Gage Reynolds, Owen Mahaffey, Gus Bierman, and Ben Meinhart each managed one hit to lead Newton Varsity Eagles.  Newton Varsity Eagles stole five bases during the game as two players stole more than one. Meinhart led the way with two.

Jones led Mt. Carmel Golden Aces Varsity with two hits in three at bats.

Eagles Defeat Lawrenceville

Newton Varsity Eagles defeated Lawrenceville Varsity Indians 5-2 on Thursday.

In the second inning, Newton Varsity Eagles got their offense started.  Mason Schafer hit a solo homer.

Carder Reich earned the win for Newton Varsity Eagles. Reich surrendered two runs on three hits over seven innings, striking out 14 and walking one.

Leyton Ivers took the loss for Lawrenceville Varsity Indians. Ivers allowed four hits and two runs over four innings, striking out five and walking one.

Newton Varsity Eagles hit one home run on the day. Schafer had a four bagger in the second inning.

Newton Varsity Eagles tallied nine hits.  Mason Mulvey and Reich each collected multiple hits for Newton Varsity Eagles.  Reich and Mulvey each collected two hits to lead Newton Varsity Eagles.  Newton Varsity Eagles tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Ben Meinhart led the way with two.

Eagles Fall to T-town After 12 Innings

Newton Varsity Eagles stayed in it until the end, but Wooden Shoes pulled away late in a 16-13 victory on Tuesday.  The game was tied at 13 with Wooden Shoes batting in the top of the thirteenth when Sam Bushur doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

Newton Varsity Eagles collected 14 hits and Wooden Shoes had 26 in the high-scoring affair.

Newton Varsity Eagles took an early lead in the third inning.  Daniel Spiker doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.

In the bottom of the eleventh inning, Newton Varsity Eagles tied things up at 13 when an error scored one run for Newton Varsity Eagles.

Newton Varsity Eagles put up five runs in the fourth inning.  Newton Varsity Eagles’s big inning was driven by doubles by Gage Reynolds and Owen Mahaffey, a walk by Spiker, and  by Mason Schafer.

Wooden Shoes scored four runs in the sixth inning.  Wooden Shoes scored its runs on a grand slam by Derek Konkel.

Bushur was credited with the victory for Wooden Shoes. The bulldog surrendered zero runs on one hit over two innings, walking one.  Cade Buehnerkemper, Garrett Gaddis, and Ben Goeckner all put in work in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team towards the victory.

Max Meinhart took the loss for Newton Varsity Eagles. Meinhart lasted six and two-thirds innings, allowing 11 hits and four runs while striking out three and walking zero.

Kayden Althoff started the game for Wooden Shoes. The pitcher surrendered eight runs on six hits over three innings, striking out four Carder Reich started the game for Newton Varsity Eagles. The righty went five innings, allowing eight runs on 11 hits, striking out eight and walking zero

Newton Varsity Eagles socked one home run on the day. Reich had a long ball in the first inning.

Newton Varsity Eagles had 14 hits in the game.  Ben Meinhart, Reynolds, Mahaffey, and Gus Bierman all managed multiple hits for Newton Varsity Eagles.  Reynolds and Meinhart each collected three hits to lead Newton Varsity Eagles.

Wooden Shoes scattered 26 hits in the game.  Bushur, Mitch Althoff, Caleb Siemer, Buehnerkemper, Konkel, Dylan Pruemer, Caleb Bloemer, and Althoff each collected multiple hits for Wooden Shoes.
