The Newton Eagles Boys Basketball team won the Cumberland Turkey Tournament. The Eagles started the tournament off by facing Vandalia. The Eagles defeated Vandalia with a final score of 72-56. At the end of the first quarter, the Eagles had the lead of 11-4. By the end of the half, the Eagles lead was 28-25. During the third quarter, the Eagles scored 27 and the Vandals 14.
Scorers for the game were: Parker Wolf with 18 (3,3,3 for 4), Caden Nichols 17 (8,0, 1 for 2), Dylan Gier 12 (6,0 0 for 1), Kye Bergbower 10 (2,2), Gus Bierman 8 (4), Jacob Weber 6 (3), Payton Harris 1 (0,0, 1 for 2). Parker Wolf led with 8 rebounds followed by Jacob Weber with 4.
Newton then faced North Clay and defeated the Cardinals with a final score of 72-56. The first quarter ended with the Eagles in the lead with a score of 11-4. At the end of the half, the score was 28-25 with the Eagles still holding the lead. During the third quarter the Eagles scored 27 to North Clay’s 14. In the final quarter, both teams upped their totals by 17 points.
Scoring for the Eagles included: Caden Nichols 4, 3, 0 for 0 = 17, Jacob Weber 5,1 = 13, Dylan Gier 3,1, 1 for 1 = 10, Max Meinhart 0,2 = 6, Parker Wolf 3=6. Kye Bergbower 1,1 =5, Kody Bergbower 0,1 = 3, Gus Bierman 1=2. Parker Wolf led in rebounds with 11 and Caden Nichols had 7.
In the Championship game of the tournament, the Eagles faced Casey-Westfield in a close match resulting in a final score of 51-47. The Eagles and Warriors both fought hard and the lead switched back and forth throughout the game. At the end of the first quarter, the Warriors were ahead 17-11, but by the half the Eagles had taken the lead 28-26. During the third quarter, the Eagles scored 7 and the Warriors 8. Caden Nichols and Dylan Gier scored 14 points each 4,1,3 for 5) and (5,0,4 for 4) respectively. Jacob Weber scored 12 = 3,1,3 for 4. Parker Wolf scored 8 (4), and Kye Bergbower scored 3 (1, 0, and 1 for 2). Leading in rebounds was Dylan Gier with 10 and Parker Wolf with 9.
