Eunice Marie Schackmann, age 97, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 1:30 AM – Thursday, December 14, 2023, at Helia Health Care in Newton, Illinois.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM – Thursday, December 21, 2023, at Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, Illinois, with Father Dean Probst, celebrating Mass.  Burial will be in the New St. Peter Cemetery, rural Newton, Illinois.  Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM – Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at the church and 9:30 to 10:30 AM – on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at the church before Mass. Eunice was born, June 16, 1926, in rural Jasper County, Illinois, the daughter of Peter and Ida (Zuber) Ochs. She married Joseph Louis Schackmann on Oct. 11, 1949, at Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Sainte Marie, Illinois.  He preceded her in death on May 15, 2010.

Eunice was a homemaker and loving wife, mother and grandmother and great grandmother.  She was a member of Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and enjoyed gardening and quilting.

Eunice was a loving mother of 11 children, Gerald (Diane) Schackmann of Newton, Illinois; Mary McDonald of Newton, Illinois; Keith (Sandra) Schackmann of Newton, Illinois; LeRoy (Christy) Schackmann of Newton, Illinois; David (Deb) Schackmann of Newton, Illinois; Susan (Tony) Thoele of Dieterich, Illinois; Daniel (Theresa) Schackmann of Newton, Illinois; Eileen (Michael) Doss of Cantonment, Florida; Michael (Annette) Schackmann of Newton, Illinois; Janice (Andrew) Dougherty of Effingham, Illinois; and infant daughter, Irene Ann Schackmann.  She is also survived by 34 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Eunice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Irene Ann Schackmann, son, LeRoy Schackmann, siblings Rosa Rubsam, Herman Ochs, Gilbert Ochs, Henrietta Deimel, Charlene Miller, Philip Ochs, Lester Ochs, Bernadine Kuenstler and Lorraine “Johnny” Ochs, granddaughter, Julie Schackmann and Great Grandchildren Ian Schackmann, Madison Schackmann, and Jordan Schackmann.
