Exploring Ste. Marie Area History: A Journey Into the Past

Exploring Ste. Marie Area History: A Journey Into the Past

Have you ever wondered why our ancestors left their established lives in Europe—full of friends, jobs, and homes—to travel to an unknown land where they didn’t even speak the language? For many, this journey led them to the Ste. Marie and Fox townships, as well as the Dark Bend areas. If you’ve ever been curious about the early settlers of these regions and their motivations, then an upcoming event is sure to be of interest.

On Sunday, April 27, 2025, at 2 PM, history enthusiasts and descendants of these settlers will gather at the Ste. Marie American Legion Hall (upstairs meeting room, which is handicap accessible) to discuss the rich history of this area and explore the question: Why did the first settlers pick this particular location?

Who Should Attend?

This event welcomes anyone whose ancestors settled in the Ste. Marie, Fox, or Bend areas, as well as those with a general interest in early county history. Whether you have personal family connections to the region or simply love learning about the past, this gathering promises to be both engaging and informative.

What to Bring

Attendees are encouraged to bring any relevant information about their ancestors, including:

  • The country or region from which their ancestors immigrated
  • The approximate time period when their ancestors settled in the Ste. Marie area
  • Where their family members initially settled upon arriving in the U.S. (if not in this region)
  • Possible reasons why their ancestors left their homeland

Admission & Registration

Admission to the event is by free-will donation. To ensure there are enough materials and handouts available for all participants, attendees are asked to RSVP by April 24, 2025. Those interested can message the event organizer on Facebook Messenger or email mdhartrich@hotmail.com.

However, if someone decides at the last moment to attend and hasn’t registered, they are still encouraged to show up anyway!

A Community Effort to Preserve History

This event will not only serve as an educational session but also as a collective effort to keep the history of Ste. Marie and surrounding areas alive. By sharing stories, documents, and family records, participants will contribute to a broader understanding of why settlers came to this part of the country and how their legacy continues to shape the community today.

Don’t miss this chance to connect with fellow history buffs, uncover fascinating ancestral stories, and gain a deeper appreciation for the hardships and triumphs of those who came before us. Mark your calendar and come prepared to step back in time!
