FIRST RESPONDERS ON SCENE OF CRASH INVOLVING ANHYDROUS AMMONIA LEAK

TEUTOPOLIS – The Illinois State Police (ISP), local law enforcement, fire, and emergency service responders are on scene of a crash on 19740 East U.S. Highway 40 about a half mile east of Teutopolis involving an anhydrous ammonia leak. Northeastern parts of Teutopolis have been evacuated and the public should avoid the area.

Around 4:50 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2023, a crash on I-70 just east of Effingham near milepost 106 caused traffic to be rerouted to U.S. Highway 40. At approximately 9:25 p.m., ISP was notified of an additional crash on U.S. Highway 40 about a half mile east of Teutopolis involving multiple vehicles, including a semi-truck that is leaking anhydrous ammonia. Due to the plume from the ammonia leak, people within an approximate one mile radius of the crash on U.S. Highway 40, including northeastern parts of Teutopolis, have been evacuated. U.S. Highway 40 between Teutopolis and Montrose is currently closed. At this time, there are multiple fatalities.

Crews are working to contain the leak while first responders and emergency workers continue to respond to the incident. ISP will share more information as soon as it is learned and confirmed.
