Sometimes in life we get to witness amazing events.
On Sunday, August 2, several people had the opportunity to witness a World War II veteran achieve a lifelong dream of receiving his high school diploma.
Robert Coad, a resident of Newton Care Center, COVID survivor, veteran, and holder of different positions in life including bus driver for Jasper Unit 1, was presented with his high school diploma from Newton Community High School and became a part of the Graduating Class of 2020.
Mrs. Beth Probst presented the diploma while speaking the following:
“This evening we are here to honor a very special individual. This individual completed 2 years of high school at Rose Hill and then was supposed to finish his high school career at Newton. Unfortunately, he was unable to attend Newton Community High School due to his family not being able to afford sending him there. At that time, he made the decision to go to work in hopes to save money up enough money to be able to finish that dream. Then, he did something even more honorable, he enlisted in the army with the idea of finishing high school once he fulfilled his obligation to the military. When he returned home from the military he worked as a plumber, a farmer and was even a bus driver for Jasper County. Proving he could do just about anything and he was not afraid of hard work.
Just recently he asked his granddaughter, Deanna about working towards his GED. As one can see he doesn’t give up easily. That is a great lesson for all of us!!! He is one of the few remaining World War II veterans and has recently survived COVID. Once again proving he does not give up!!! From what I have been told, sir, it has been a lifelong dream of yours to acquire a high school diploma. Well tonight that dream is going to come true!!
Robert Coad it is my honor and privilege to present you a Newton Community High School diploma. Your courage to overcome adversity throughout life, your dedication to our country, and your passion for pursing an education are just a few of the reasons you deserve to be presented this diploma. Newton Community High School would like to thank you for your service to our country and for being an outstanding role model not just for our current students but for all them in years to come. It is individuals like you Robert, that not only makes this world a better place, but make us love our hometown.
Congratulations Robert Coad you are now a member of Newton Community High Schools Class of 2020!!”
