Jasper Unit 1 Summary of Minutes for August 2025

Following is a summary of minutes of a regular meeting of the Board of Education of Jasper County Community Unit School District No. 1 held on Monday, August 18th, 2025 in the office of the Board of Education.  Board members present were Mr. Brady Shull, Mrs. Jackie Schackmann, Mrs. Mandy Rieman, Mr. Evan Semple, and Mrs. Nichole Mulvey.  Board members absent were Mr. David Blecha and Mrs. Mandi Utley.

All votes are considered unanimous unless otherwise noted.

Mandy Rieman called the meeting to order.

Approval to Adopt the Agenda.

Mandy asked for Recognition of Guests and Public Comments.  Shae Zumbahlen expressed her concerns about cell phones with cameras in locker rooms.  Rochele Koebele expressed her concerns with cell phones in schools.  Kristine Michels expressed her thoughts about homeschooling and participation in extracurricular activities.

There were no FOIA Requests.

Approval of Consent Agenda as presented.

Travis Wyatt as a volunteer baseball coach for JCJH Baseball,

Jack Kinkade as a volunteer football coach for NCHS Football,

Under the Superintendent’s Report, Mr. Sornberger discussed the FY 26 tentative budget.  Overall, the district ended the fiscal year in good standing with revenues exceeding budgeted numbers and expenditures less than predicted with a surplus in the Education Fund and Operation & Maintenance Funds.  The budget for FY 26 looks to balance in the Operation/Maintenance Fund and Transportation Fund.  At this time, the Education Fund looks to be in a deficit.  The District will monitor revenues and expenditures in the Education Fund in hopes of finishing without a deficit.

Approval of the to establish a Budget Hearing for FY 26 Budget on September 22nd, 2025 at 6:20 p.m.

Approval to seek bids for construction of the building addition at Newton Elementary School for the option three plan, which includes two pre-k classrooms and six kindergarten classes.  This also includes an alternate bid for two other classrooms.

Approval of Mandy Rieman and Nichole Mulvey to serve as members of the SESE Governing Board.

There was no Closed Session.

Approval to accept the resignation from Rachel Buening as a NES 1st Grade Teacher.

Approval to hire Shandy Holmes as a SME Kindergarten teacher for the 2025-2026 school year.

Approval to hire Austin Reisner for the District Maintenance position effective immediately.  

Approval to hire Jordan Baker as a District Paraprofessional for the 2025-2026 school year.

Approval to hire Katie (Beals) Wiles as the JCJH Scholastic Bowl Coach for the 2025-2026 school year.

Approval to hire Linda Tharp as the Assistant JCJH Cross-Country Coach for the 2025-2026 school year.

Meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m.  Next regular board meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 22nd, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. at the Board of Education Office located at 1401 Clayton Avenue.
