Jaxson Wilson, son of Jeremy and Rhonda Wilson, will be attending Lakeland College in Mattoon for Trapshooting. During his time at NCHS, Jaxson has been an active participant in activities including, FFA, Blaze Orange Trapshooting Team, and Newton Boy Scout Troop 156 where he earned the highest rank possible of Eagle Scout.
What made you decide this school was the best fit for you?
Lake Land offered the degree I planned to pursue as well as having a Trap Shooting team. Being close to Newton I will still be able to help on the farm in the evenings to earn extra money.
How do you feel NCHS has prepared you for this next step in life?
NCHS has help prepare me for the next step by offering Dual Credits where I can get a college structured class and earn a college credit. By NCHS offering Trap Shooting I was able to participate in a sport that has taught me many important life lessons
What are at least two life lessons you have learned from sports?
I have learned that if you are willing to put your mind to something that you can accomplish anything. Another life lesson that I have learned is to be mentally prepared for the task at hand. Night time shoot-offs with the best shooters in the United States has taught me to just focus on my targets and not worry about the performance of the other shooters in the shoot-off.
How have your coaches (and assistant coaches) helped prepare you to play at a collegiate level?
My trap coaches have helped teach the importance of practicing to be prepared for competitions and helping me to be more mentally prepared to break every target. They also taught me this sport is really only a one target at a time sport. When start thinking about breaking 100 out of 100 targets you miss one for sure, so just break them one at a time.
What will you miss the most next year about not being at NCHS?
The thing I will miss most about not being at NCHS is the friends I have made throughout high school career.
