The Newton Lady Eagles ran into a tough Marshall squad Monday, falling 11-3 at home despite flashes of solid play on both sides of the ball.
Marshall struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on a pair of Newton errors to take an early lead. The Lady Lions continued to build momentum, adding runs in the third and fourth innings before breaking the game open with a four-run sixth.
Newton battled back in spots, plating single runs in the third, fourth, and seventh innings, but couldn’t overcome Marshall’s steady offense and dominant pitching.
Lexie Ghast got the start in the circle for Newton, working 4⅔ innings while allowing six hits and four runs, only two of them earned, while striking out three. Emma Inyart and Karly Deckard provided relief down the stretch as Marshall finished with 12 hits on the day.
Offensively, the Lady Eagles were limited to just two hits, with Ghast and Audrie Reich each collecting one. Despite the limited hits, Newton found ways to manufacture runs, with Paige Wagner and Emma Brooks each driving in a run. The Lady Eagles also executed a double play defensively.
Marshall was led by McKenzie Davis, who drove in five runs, while Caitlyn Hilliard and Lauren English each recorded three hits. In the circle, Kyla Gustafson was dominant, striking out 14 and allowing just two hits over seven innings.
Newton will look to bounce back as they travel to face Paris in their next contest.
