
The Newton Lady Eagles turned in a strong team performance Monday, May 4, finishing second at their home invite with 109 points.
Robinson won the women’s varsity team title with 114 points, while Newton followed close behind in second. Fairfield was third with 78, Teutopolis fourth with 77 and Effingham fifth with 51.
Newton picked up two event wins on the day. Layna Marshall won the 1600 meters in 5:35.28, while the 4×800 relay team of Marshall, Avery Geier, Brooke Gentry and Grace Schumacher took first in 9:57.73.
Stella Schackmann had a strong day in the sprints, placing third in both the 100 meters with a time of 12.44 and the 200 meters in 26.09. Mariah McVicar also scored in both events, finishing sixth in the 100 and fifth in the 200.
Grace Schumacher added a fourth-place finish in the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 1:03.19. Geier placed fourth in the 800, followed by Josie Vogt in fifth.
In the field events, Emma Schumacher placed second in pole vault with a personal-best mark of 2.92 meters. Ava Duncan was third in shot put, Maddie Brummer was third in discus, Audrey Beals placed fourth in high jump, and Lena Fehrenbacher was fourth in triple jump with a personal best.
Newton also had several strong relay finishes, placing second in the 4×200, third in the 4×100 and third in the 4×400.
The meet also included senior recognition for the Lady Eagles, adding a special moment to a strong night of competition at home.
