
The Newton Lady Eagles put together a strong sectional performance, finishing second as a team with 106.5 points behind Robinson’s 131.
Layna Marshall led Newton with a first-place finish in the 3200 meters in 12:00.61 and also qualified in the 1600 meters, placing second in 5:34.00. Newton’s 4×800 relay team of Marshall, Avery Geier, Brooke Gentry and Grace Schumacher also captured first place in 10:15.45 to qualify.
Stella Schackmann continued a standout day for the Lady Eagles, qualifying in the 100 meters with a fourth-place finish in 12.43, the 200 meters with a fourth-place finish in 25.87, and the long jump with a personal-best leap of 5.04 meters. Schackmann also joined Emma Schumacher, Mariah McVicar and Morgan Schafer on the third-place 4×100 relay team, which finished in 50.28 to qualify.
Newton also qualified in the 4×200 relay, with Emma Schumacher, McVicar, Brenly Francis and Schafer placing third in 1:50.48. The 4×400 relay team of Gentry, Geier, Emma Schumacher and Grace Schumacher placed second in 4:15.34 to advance.
Emma Schumacher added another qualifying performance in the pole vault, finishing second at 2.61 meters.
Other strong Newton finishes included Avery Geier placing fourth in the 800 meters in 2:31.83, Heather Bergbower finishing fifth in the 3200 meters in 13:24.61, Ava Duncan placing fifth in the shot put at 9.79 meters, Audrey Beals finishing fifth in the high jump at 1.48 meters, and Lena Fehrenbacher placing fifth in the triple jump at 9.57 meters.
Newton’s depth across sprints, distance, relays and field events helped the Lady Eagles claim the runner-up team finish and continue their postseason push.
